Fitness Challenge – Week 1

We’re actually 9 days into the fitness challenge so I decided to aim for Saturday Mornings for my update.

I feel as if the challenge is going quite well. I am eating better for the most part (there was a late night, after work hangout session with co-workers that involved ice cream), but that is ok. I have been eating much more fruit and vegetables during the day, however I don’t know that I am always hitting my goal of Including 2 Fruit servings and at least 5 vegetable servings per day. There are many days where it seems opposite where I am eating 5 fruits and 2 veggies a day but it is all still good for me, and way better than I was doing before so I’m not being to hard on myself.

Visit the gym at least 3 times a week for a minimum 30 minutes per visit. In 9 days I have been to the gym 5 times, aiming to go every other day to give my body some rest. Every visit has been about 40 minutes to an hour of working out. I am using a new app called JEFIT, and I am still figuring out the calculations and how to use it to get the most out of my workouts. Today it said I only worked out for 34 minutes. This was not possible since I did 20 minutes on the treadmill alone. It is possible I did work out just on my circuit for that amount of time but I haven’t gone that deep into the program.

Try at least one class  I haven’t done this yet but I plan to. Brian has done 2 classes at this point and he has been enjoying them.

Plank for at least a minute – I’m up to 32 seconds of plank time so I think I have this one in the bag.

Continue to work with my personal trainer – this goal unfortunately I had to abandon already. It actually crushed me when the realization that no matter how we spun out budget I couldn’t afford it or justify it. The price tag for Brian and I to continue to work with the personal trainer 3 times a week was in the area of $12,000. Yes TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLARS! The list of things I could do with that money is very long including paying for my schooling almost twice. I really wanted to continue this program but I have many people who have offered to support and guide me including former personal trainers. I think I will be ok, and I will be much richer at the end.

Lose 5 pounds – Depending on what you look at I could be halfway to my goal already or behind it. I have a spreadsheet set up, maybe overkill but keeping track interests me. I have a page that tracks my scale at home, and my inches measurements and then I have a page that I enter all the information from the fancy scale from the gym. According to my scale at home I am down 2.5 pounds. I like that number, According to the scale at the gym I have gained weight. The scale at home I stand on about the same time everyday, which makes me think I have lost the weight. The gym scale breaks down your weight into Fat Mass, Fat Free Mass and Water Weight. When I entered this into the spreadsheet and compared the two numbers, I was upset at first because I gained weight. However when you seriously looked at it, I have lost 3.6 pounds of fat, and gained 3.81 pounds in muscle mass. Those numbers are exactly what I was going after. I want to lose the fat and replace it with muscle, and that is exactly what I did.

So week one I’m well on my way. I’m finding I am excited to head to the gym and spend some serious time working on me.
